Pathology is the key subject that bridges pre-clinical sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry) to the clinical branches of Medicine and Surgery. Its aims are to determine causes, analyse effects, and develop methods for early detection and improved management of diseases of medical and social importance. In correlation with Homoeopathy, the department also discusses pathogenicity and virulence of microbes in relation to constitutional susceptibility and miasmatic concepts.
The programme is 12 months long and provides a broad graduate-level background in cell biology, microbiology, immunology and pathology. Students train through small groups, lectures, seminars and tutorials. Performance is regularly assessed by monthly tests and internal assessment examinations.
The teaching programme for both theory and practical classes is prepared monthly and yearly and is displayed on the department notice board for students' reference.
Seminars are held once every 15 days with audio-visual aids on assigned topics presented by students. The department conducts inter-departmental seminars with Physiology and Anatomy once a month.
Tutorials occur once every 15 days and are arranged as small-group discussions to encourage active learning.
Monthly assessments (PCT) are conducted to monitor progress.
The department conducts three internal assessment examinations as per the guidelines of RGUHS. A student must secure at least 50% of the total marks fixed for internal assessment in the subject to be eligible to appear in the university examination. The internal assessment score will be considered as the best of two.
